PCT Gear List

****this was for the PCT in 2012, to be updated soon for the CDT

Well here it is, just understand that this is a work in progress. I have little control over the trail, but can at least decide what I put on my back. My gear will change, things that don't get used or break will be switched up, I am also particularly skillful at losing things so who knows what my gear will end up like. As far as the list itself I bought a kitchen scale and had originally been weighing stuff in ounces but the totals were getting more and more inaccurate so I went with grams. Enjoy

I wish I didn't run cold and fear hunger and dehydration but hey we all have fears right?

Grams
Tent
Tarptent Notch (with stuff sack and 4 stakes)
Not as light as I would like and dependent on trekking poles, but I feel more confident with it than a tarp and its lighter than my old rei tent
787
Ground cloth
Tyvek
Planning on lots of cowboy camping, protects the sleeping bag and tent when used
124
Sleeping Bag
WM Ultralite
Hopefully keeps me toasty warm
879
Sleeping Pad
Ridgerest
Puncture proof, and I already have it, maybe after the desert switch to a neo air (inflatable) or something similar
416
Sleeping Bag Liner
Cocoon Silk Liner
Helps keep my bag clean and adds just a bit of warmth
120
Pack
ULA Circuit
Love the hip belt and pockets!

Lightweight, for sleeping
115
Baselayer shirt
Merino  long sleeve
Lightweight, for sleeping
144

261
Windshirt
Patagonia Houdini
Still not 100% I will bring this but I love it as part of my layering system
114
Raingear
DriDucks Jacket
A ginourmous jacket. If you are looking to get these size down! Didn’t know that and am stuck with a monster size M
162
Socks
2 pairs darn tough
Switched out throughout the day, one pair just for sleeping

Clothing Worn

Footwear
Brooks Adrenaline?
Bane of my existence, still not sure here. Have tried to make the jump to trail runners but am having a tough time finding a good fit. Right now it’s the overbuilt runners I use for work

Shirt
Ex officio Air stripe lite
Giving this whole long sleeve button down thing a try, has a little bit of mesh for ventilation, light colored so not quite as hot (in theory anyway). Plus I can really show off how filthy my clothing gets when its light J
220
Shorts
Patagonia Baggies
Can’t quite suck it up and hike in pants yet, all the sunscreen and pointy things in the desert may convert me but until then I have these garishly ugly comfy things bc they are super tough and fairly cheap on closeout
139
Socks
Darn tough merino
Last for ages, seams don’t seem to bother me. Hopefully not too hot
52
Hat
Columbia omnishade
Super dorky but hopefully can protect my pale sunburn prone self
83
Gaiters
Dirty Girl
Keeps at least some of the desert out of your shoes
35
underwear
Andiamo liners
Don’t always wear but help prevent chafe (face it, it happens)
65

Bra: Shock Absorber
Why is this one so hard? Guys, I hate you for this one
110
Trekking Poles
Not counting the weight in totals b/c shouldn’t be in pack
Have had some knee problems so I’m giving them a try, plus I love the extra oomph they give you going uphill

Kitchen

Stove
Caldera Cone and soda can stove
Seems like a good system, have played with it a bit but am by no means an expert
50
Utensil
Ti spoon (long handle)
Helps keep your fingers clean with its handy extra longness, plus I already had it and its titanium!
13
Pot
Evernew 900
Seems like a popular sized pot for solo hikers, it’s still hard for me to break away from the whole I am feeding a large group mentality so it seems awfully tiny
111
Misc Kitchen stuff
Bag, cloth, matches, lighter, fuel bottle
Stoves are pretty useless without accessories like fuel and fire
70
Food Bag
Ursak Minor
I have had rodents chew through so many food bags…
78
Electronics

Phone
Iphone 4S with case
Helps keep in touch with family, resupply, journal etc
170
Charger
Iphone cord, wall plug, new trent imp70
A dead iphone doesn’t do me much good
267
Camera
Panasonic
Old and heavier than I want, not sure I can handle just the Iphone camera
264
MP3 Player
Sansa clip
Will probably add on later in hike, works with the same charger as my phone
40
Spot
Spot II
For my mother J, battery powered emergency
147

Miscellaneous

Knife
Gerber LST
For cutting things…
16
First Aid
Bag of stuff
Tape, hydropel, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, toothbrush, toothpaste, Diva cup
100
Water Bottles
2-4 L bottles
2 L platypus (for sawyer)
1 L platypus (also sawyer)
Max will need 6-8 L in desert; most of these bottles will be bought and replaced as I go. Bonus: you get a full bottle of something when it’s time to replace
400 (ish)
Water Treatment
Filter:  sawyer squeeze filter
Haven’t used it except in my kitchen but seems promising. No more big filters for me and I would prefer to not solely use chemicals and this has no batteries…
80

Aquamira
Or bleach, backup for now
57

Trash compactor bag
Easier to replace than dry bags and stuff sacks, extra insurance to keep things dry

Julbo
Must have

  1. Hope to see what you finally decided on. These are always brain twisters, aren't they? Everytime I go out I have a new kit, it always changes. I'm sure your choices will be fine.

  2. Hi Maya! Congratulations again on finishing the PCT :). My mom is strongly considering doing it, as well. She was wondering what equipment worked out for you, and what was unnecessary or did not work so well? Also, I was wondering how you were able to keep the journal without a solar panel to charge the Iphone? Did you just charge it at convenience stores and what not? Hope you are well.

    1. Hey Eli! I finally started putting together a review of all my gear and I promise I'll finish it soon. Your mom can ask me anything more specific if she wants. I used solar, goal zero nomad charger. Alternated between just charging the battery pack and using the solar panel. Depended on how long a stretch I was on.

  3. Hi Maya! This is Erin/Backup, who was hiking with Buster and Grit. I think we all stealth camped at the delicious water spigot off of Sunrise Highway. Anyway, I didn't finish my thru hike last year due to shin splints (left at Wrightwood...), but I'm already planning on starting another thru in 2014. YAY. I was wondering how you liked the Shock Absorber sports bra. I had a moving comfort one, and it sucked, so I'm looking for a different one for next time. Sports bras seem to be the least reviewed pieces of gear out there.
